Abstract

My intention with this paper is to show to the reader that,contrary of other works which try to present memory as presence and positivity,that is, in the form of remembrances and stored facts, this issue canbe discussed under a different and opposite perspective, namely, memoryas forgetfulness, necessary and involuntary forgetfulness, which is causedby the action of ideology (that is, of unconscious). Departing from thispoint, I will stress the role of history in the constitution and functioning ofmemory, and I will approach this question from the point of view of adouble interrelated matrix which will be shown to be the real of historyside by side with the action of interdiscourse and of the archive (here, inPêcheux´s sense, of those things which ought to be known).
