Abstract

This paper addresses the Portuguese nominalization phenomenon – particularly,  deverbal nouns denoting events and event participants – in Distributed Morphology framework (Halle & Marantz, 1993, 1994). Specifically, this work discusses certain phonological (truncation, vowel harmony, lowering, primary stress), morphophonological (allomorphy, affix selection), and semantic (non-compositional meaning, idioms) phenomena pose a problem to the Phase Theory in wordhood (Embick, 2010) as regards the phase status of the first categorizer head (in that case, v^o). In summary, this article argues that in order to account for these empirical facts, Phase Theory in wordhood ought to be less constraintful as to allow for nP and vP to be computed at the same cycle.
