Abstract

The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) is a short score to assess female sexual function. It still has not been translated and validated to be used in Portuguese speakers. Objective: to compare the sexual function of women of infertile couples (assisted fertilization, AF) with that of women seeking surgical sterilization (tubal ligation, TL). Method: a cross-sectional study was carried out. The Female Sexual Function Index was translated and validated for Portuguese language. Sample included 215 women who sought the Setor de Infertildade do Serviço de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia do Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) and Serviço de Orientação e Planejamento Familiar. Results: years of study was higher in group FA (8.34 ± 3.73 X 9.51 ± 4.23, p = 0.032); partner´s age (38.86 ± 8.76 X 34.25 ± 6.72 years p < 0.001) and years of marital relationship (11.94 ± 7.26 X 8.11 ± 4.58 years, p < 0.001) were higher in group TL. The greatest positive correlation in the TL group was between orgasm and sexual satisfaction (0.798), in group AF between desire and arousal (0.627). The scores for orgasm and satisfaction were higher for group AF (p = 0.048 and p= 0.026, respectively). Conclusion: women from infertile couples and fertile women who wanted to undergo surgical sterilization showed good scores for sexual satisfaction, these scores being similar between the two groups.
