Abstract

Reports the experience of the Palliative Care Study Group, presenting its scientific production as well as the organization of an admission center at the Porto Alegre Hospital de Clínicas (HCPA) for patients needing palliative care. It deals with palliative care, a recently adopted term to describe necessary end-of-life care aimed at increasing the quality of life of patients and their families, treating pain and other physical, psychosocial and spiritual problems that attack those people. It presents the emergence of this discipline and comments on the different ways to address the issue of dying and death in both modern and contemporary life.
