Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding is one of the most important and complete forms of nutrition. Method: This is a cross-sectional study with contemporary data and a non-probabilistic sample, characterized by the selection of participants by convenience. The present study aimed to evaluate the differences in oral motor patterns between late preterm newborns (LPN) and term newborns (TN) in relation to breastfeeding. Results: 468 dyads who had difficulties adhering to breastfeeding in the first days of life participated, with 365 born after 37 weeks and 103 after 37 weeks of gestation. The difference in pauses during the sucking/swallowing/breathing coordination was considered significant, with 93.9% (n=341) performing adequate pauses in TN and 85.3% (n=87) in LPN. Regarding breastfeeding in term newborns, 60.5% were classified as “good” while in late LPN the occurrence was 44.7% (n=46). Conclusion: There are significant differences between the oral motor pattern of LPN when compared to TN.
