The Scientific Week is the largest annual scientific event at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, serving as a forum to showcase the research we conduct daily and to bring together undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty, and professionals from other institutions in Porto Alegre and the state. For 41 years, we have come together to promote research and scientific collaborations, inspire young researchers, reflect on our role as producers of knowledge within society, and seek solutions to the constant and multiple challenges we face to keep young people interested in research and to keep research alive in our institutions.
In 2020, due to the severe restrictions imposed by the pandemic, we held the scientific week entirely virtually and successfully organized a more streamlined event with a broad reach to both internal and external audiences. The positive experience of 2020 gave us confidence to repeat the event in a fully digital format, which actually allows us to reach a larger number of people. In 2021, we recorded 1,538 registered participants, and after the event, all activities will remain available in digital format for twelve months on the Scientific Week's dedicated website.
We have improved the platform for evaluating and promoting free-theme submissions, which enables interaction among research teams and engagement with the external community. This year, 931 free-theme submissions were selected for presentation, including 44 oral presentations. Continuing our efforts to bring scientific research closer to the community, a team of science communicators will evaluate and select the best works after review by experts.
