The Scientific Week is our largest scientific event, an annual forum to showcase the research we conduct here on a daily basis and to bring together undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and professionals from our institution as well as other organizations in Porto Alegre and the state. For 44 years, we have continually met to promote research and scientific collaborations, motivate young researchers, reflect on our role as knowledge producers within society, and also seek solutions to the constant and multiple challenges we face in maintaining young people's interest in research, keeping research alive in our institutions, and transforming research results into tangible products and actions for the community.
The 44th Scientific Week had 2,700 registered participants, and all activities are available digitally on the event’s microsite. This year, we again featured a platform for the dissemination and evaluation of open themes, which enables interaction among research teams and engagement even with the external community. There were over 800 open topics available to read, like, and comment on.
On the final day of the week, a group of science communicators evaluated and selected the best works from those already highlighted in academic reviews by specialists. With the central theme “Active Science, Healthy Living,” we discussed disease prevention and health promotion at different life stages and in challenging scenarios such as night-shift workers and communities directly affected by climate crises.
The week included four courses: strategies to connect and communicate science, health in the Black population, health of night-shift workers, and best practices in handling biological samples for research. Lastly, we were honored to have, in the opening conference, Prof. Ricardo Loret de Mola from Southern Illinois University, who spoke about important challenges related to human fertility.
Finally, on the last day of our event, we held a multidisciplinary discussion on the important topic of data use and sharing in research.
