Abstract

The main objective of this work is to analyze and reflect on the presentation and organization of Galician-Portuguese medieval poetry in two specific anthologies: Cantigas de Trovadores Medievais em Português Moderno (1953), organized by the Brazilian Cleonice Berardinelli and Cantares dos Trovadores Galego-Portugueses (1998), organized and presented by the Portuguese Natália Correia. What both anthologies have in common is the fact that the organizers chose to present, along with the original songs, a translation into modern Portuguese, in order to make reading and understanding the poems more accessible – written in medieval language, the Galician-Portuguese. Therefore, we focus on the presentations given in the prefaces of the anthologies, as well as the translations of the troubadour songs. With this, we intend to reflect on the methods of the organizers; and whether such presentation of anthologies made the reading and understanding of medieval texts more accessible.
