Abstract

At a time like the present, when it seems that the national states are losing their protagonism in the production and reproduction of identities, in which the modem conception of ctizenship weakens, and in doing so, so does the conception of the modem school, an appeal to reconstruct a new citizenship appears in the discourse of educational reforms. This text refreshes this central aspect of the relationship between education and democracy, in the process of building the national states, and analizes how the concept of citizenship is redefined in a postindustrial society and in a postmodem culture, and what new role is assigned to the school in the citizenship formation, making a special reference to the Argentine case.
