Author Guidelines

Educação & Realidadedoes not charge fees for submitting and publishing articles.

1. Educação & Realidade publishes articles that focus on the field of education, derived from theoretical studies, empirical research, analysis of specific practices or controversial and current debates in the area. The papers, written in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, must be unpublished manuscripts or available on preprint servers accepted by the journal. Research reports are only published when converted into a scientific journal article. Preprint submissions from the following servers are acceptable: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv. The journal editors will analyze the acceptance of Preprints from other servers.

2. The base criteria for the publication of papers are their contribution to the field of education, the originality of the theme or treatment of the subject, the consistency and accuracy of the theoretical and methodological approaches and the text overall quality.

3. The manuscripts must be submitted at the journal’s website (http://educreal.ufrgs.br – the site offers an English version). The texts must be saved in Microsoft Word or a compatible format and must be justified, typed in 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman font, size 12. Quotations with more than three lines must always come as a new paragraph, size 10, without quotes, and indented.

4. The name(s) of the author(s) should not be included in the document submitted to evaluation. The author(s) should also exclude any sentences or notes that could identify them in any way, since Educação & Realidade uses double-blind review. Any identification of the author(s) should also be excluded from the document properties on Microsoft Word.

5. All author(s) identification information should be entered directly into the appropriate fields of the article registration screen, on the journal’s site, including author(s) full name, postal address, telephone, e-mail contact, institutional affiliation, and a brief bio (maximum three lines). This information should not be included in the Microsoft Word file submitted in the site.

6. Manuscripts must be accompanied by a supplementary document or comment to the editor stating the availability of the data used and generated in the research underlying the texts, according to one of the three options below:
- URL address of the dataset;
- statement that all data are available in the text;
- indication that the data should be requested from the corresponding author. This option is only available in cases where there are ethical restrictions, for security or financial reasons.

7. Articles should have between 35,000 and 60,000 characters (including spaces), be formatted for A4 paper, include references, notes and tables. They must be accompanied by a coversheet with title in the original language and English, abstract in the original language and English (between 550 and 750 characters, including spaces) and keywords (maximum 5) in the original language and English. Titles should be no longer than 75 characters, including spaces. The cover sheet may not contain any identification of the author(s).

8. Double quotes are only to be used in direct quotes in the body of the text; italics should be used for words with unconventional use and foreign words, neologisms and titles of publications.

9. The citations should follow the form (Smith, 2015) or (Smith, 2015, p. 55). Different titles by the same author, published in the same year, should be distinguished by adding a letter after the date (Smith, 2015a, p. 55).

10. The reference section must contain only the authors and texts cited in the paper and be presented at the end of the text, in alphabetical order, obeying the ABNT standards available in http://www.ufrgs.br/edu_realidade/referencias-er.htm. When applicable, always indicate the translator's name after the title of the book or article.

Below are some examples of how to proceed:

Books:

LAST NAME OF AUTHOR, First names without abbreviation. Book Title: subtitle. Place of publication: Publisher, year of publication.

Book chapters:

Journals:

LAST NAME OF AUTHOR, First names without abbreviation. Article Title: subtitle. Journal title, place of publication, institution, volume number, issue number, first and last page of the article, month and year of publication.

Theses and dissertations:

LAST NAME OF AUTHOR, First names without abbreviation. Title: subtitle. Year. Number of sheets. Dissertation or thesis (Master or Doctorate in on) - Program Name University Name, Location, year.

Electronic document:

LAST NAME OF AUTHOR, First names without abbreviations. Title. Edition. Location: year. No. p. and Vol. (series) (if any) Available at: Accessed: day month (abbreviated), year.

11. Papers that do not follow these guidelines will be sent back to the author(s) and will not be considered for evaluation.

12. The process of evaluation of articles submitted to Educação & Realidade takes this flow:

a) Analysis on the form: at this stage, articles are examined by at least two of the editors and are assessed for their compliance with the general criteria and the editorial line of Educação & Realidade. Papers are rejected if they: 1) are experience reports; 2) are configured solely as literature review; 3) are a part of a dissertation or thesis without proper adaptation; 4) are a project or research report; 5) do not present a sufficiently thorough analysis of the issue which is presented in the paper; 6) do not have theoretical or methodological consistency; 7) do not have the field of education as a central axis of the discussion; 8) have grammatical errors or problems in the structure of the text; 9) are merely descriptive and do not present an analysis of the issues being presented; 10) do not have the form of a scientific article; 11) do not meet standards of Educação & Realidade for article submissions (formatting, citations, references...); 12) do not show results, formulations or conclusions that represents improvements to the present knowledge in the area of the paper; 13) do not present empirical evidence or sufficiently developed arguments that support the conclusions. The papers that do not fall into any of the above categories will be considered for the next phase.

b) Analysis, by double-blind peer review, of the paper merits: in this second phase, the Editor in charge sends the article to at least two referees with expertise in the specific thematic area of paper (either member of the editorial board or ad hoc reviewers). For the selection of referees and their thematic areas, the Lattes platform (a database of CVs) is used. The evaluation takes into account the following criteria: contribution to the field of education; theme originality and / or treatment of the subject; argumentative consistency; rigor of theoretical and methodological approach; overall quality of the text. The referees can fully accept the article, request revisions or reject the article. Any of these decisions are qualified by a review. When two referees refuse the work, the article is returned to the author. When two referees accept the paper, it goes to revision and enters the publication queue. Finally, when one or two referees condition the publication to revisions, the paper is returned to the author, requesting that the author(s) reformulate their paper within thirty days and return it to the journal. When the author sends the revised paper to the journal, it is reassessed and, if approved, passes to the final stage.

c) Proofreading and adaptation of the paper to the norms of Educação & Realidade: once accepted for publication, the paper is subjected to language review and standardization. The article is sent to the author with suggestions for corrections and adjustments, before it is sent by the editors for publication. To increase the visibility and international access of published articles, the English version of articles written in Portuguese or Spanish accepted for publication must be provided and funded by the authors after final acceptance. Additionally, starting in February 2025, for articles written in English approved for publication, the authors must submit the translated version in Portuguese or Spanish.

13. The final version of the approved article will be published with the name of the editor or editors responsible for the manuscript evaluation process.
