Em “Reflexões sobre Little Rock”, um de seus textos mais controversos, Hannah Arendt aborda a questão da dessegregação das escolas no sul dos Estados Unidos a partir de suas categorias de privado, social e político – categorias que em si mesmas já renderam controvérsias. Nas últimas décadas o texto tem sido recuperado para avaliar a abordagem arendtiana da questão negra. Este artigo busca apresentar um pouco dessa discussão avaliando se a defesa que Seyla Benhabib fez de Arendt no contexto das discussões feministas dos anos 80 e 90 – articulando dois modelos de espaço público em suas obras – é capaz de iluminar alguns aspectos do embate racial ou se as distinções realmente impedem o alargamento da mentalidade por parte de Arendt e sua consequente abertura para o novo.
