REVISITING JOHAN GALTUNG'S VIOLENCE THEORY:
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRUCTURAL, CULTURAL, AND DIRECT VIOLENCE

This article aims to present the theoretical approach of the sociologist Johan Galtung, one of the leading figures in studies on violence and peace, regarding the phenomenon of violence. Initially, the three central concepts of the author's work (direct violence, structural violence, and cultural violence) will be introduced. Subsequently, a brief discussion will be carried out concerning the relationship among the aforementioned concepts, in order to highlight the possible connections between the three. To achieve this goal, we rely on bibliographic analysis of Galtung's main texts as well as works by commentators. Among the main findings, the central role of cultural and structural violence as causes of direct violence can be emphasized.
