Abstract

Fifty years after the publication of Les Vérités de La Palice (1975), revisiting Pêcheux means returning to a theory that transformed the understanding of language as a social, historical, and ideological practice. This text outlines his trajectory, from the French structuralist context to the phase of rectification, expressed in Annex 3 of the American edition. It synthesizes the four parts of this work, highlighting the core concepts that sustain Materialist Discourse Analysis (DA), and examines Pêcheux’s self-critique, relating it to the role of Lacanian psychoanalysis in his thought. The text concludes that DA constitutes a theory in permanent construction, demanding from researchers the same epistemological openness to revision and renewal that Pêcheux himself cultivated. Such openness, however, does not imply abandoning its foundations: the centrality of ideology in its contradictory constitution; the subject interpellated by ideology yet divided and capable of resistance; and language as the privileged site where these forces are inscribed and contested. To ignore these pillars is to move away from Pêcheux’s DA. Ultimately, this text defends a materialist AD committed to the political, the ethical, and the aesthetic. A DA engaged with the polis, with otherness, and with the pursuit of a more just world.
