Objective: To evaluate the irradiance of light-curing devices used in Primary Health Care Units (UBS) in the municipality of Santa Luzia, PB, considering different protection and disinfection methods. Materials and Methods: Six devices were assessed using the RD-7® radiometer under different conditions: disinfection with 70% alcohol and use of physical barriers (one or two layers of PVC film and plastic bag). Measurements were performed with exposure times of 20 and 40 seconds. Data were analyzed using non-parametric statistical tests. Results: The use of 70% alcohol minimally interfered with irradiance, yielding the best performance. Thicker barriers, such as two layers of PVC or plastic bags, significantly reduced power output. A single layer of PVC proved efficient and less detrimental to irradiance. Devices with visible damage to the light guide tip showed decreased performance. An exposure time of 40 seconds resulted in higher irradiance compared to 20 seconds. Discussion: The findings suggest that inappropriate barriers and physical damage compromise device effectiveness and may affect the quality of resin polymerization. Furthermore, the chosen exposure time directly influences energy delivery. The use of 70% alcohol and thin barriers helps preserve irradiance without compromising biosafety. Conclusion: Proper maintenance, rational use of physical barriers, and optimal light-curing time are essential to ensure the clinical effectiveness of light-curing devices in public dental clinics.
