Author Guidelines

INTRODUCTION The Revista da Faculdade de Odontologia de Porto Alegre (RFO-POA) aims at publishing short communication, basic and clinical research work, clinical case reports, and review articles, with or without meta-analyses. All articles must be original, written either in Portuguese or English and submitted solely to RFO-POA without simultaneous submission elsewhere. To submit, at least one of the authors must have a master’s degree. Any manuscript that has already been published in a preprint server won't be accepted. RFO-POA does not charge any fee for subscription, submission, evaluation, editions, or publication.

PUBLICATION ETHICS AND MALPRACTICE STATEMENT

Authorship

The Revista da Faculdade de Odontologia de Porto Alegre (RFO-POA) adheres to the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editor (ICMJE) regarding authorship agreements. RFO-POA also states that the author is responsible for the content and for the integrity of the research, as informed in the Declaration of Singapore.

Conflicts of interest

Authors must declare an absence of conflicts of interest when submitting the paper. If potential conflict of interest is spotted while the proof is being reviewed, it must be reported, and the proof must be declined.

Ethical committee approval

Studies involving human subjects must be in agreement with resolution 466/12 of the Conselho Nacional de Saúde (if conducted in Brazil) and/or with the Declaration of Helsinki, obligated to be approved by an appropriate ethical research committee with its respective number of approval within the paper. Studies that involve animal subjects must state in the text the approval given by an ethical committee and also must state where the animals were obtained and where the experiments were conducted. Additionally, when submitting original articles or case reports involving humans or animals, it is mandatory to provide proof of approval by the ethical committee as a complementary document. Submissions that do not present the required documents will be immediately rejected before peer review.

Anti-plagiarism policy

All manuscripts will go through an investigation process for potential plagiarism before they are sent to the blind peer review. The journal does not agree with plagiarism of ideas; it is the author’s responsibility to ensure the originality of the paper by following the process of quoting that is specified in the Author Guidelines. If plagiarism is identified, the article will be immediately rejected.

Ethical violations

In case of any ethical violation—plagiarism, unmentioned conflicts of interest, duplicate publication, authorship related matters, data fabrication, misappropriation of ideas or data by referees, etc.—anyone, whether a member of the academic community or not, is allowed to report by emailing revistaodonto@ufrgs.br. The journal follows COPE's flowcharges for identification and guidance regarding misconduct. Eventually, if a decision of misconduct is countercharged, a committee with members of the editorial board and apt non-members of the editorial board will analyze the decision.

Corrections and disclaimers

In cases where corrections and disclaimers may occur, the ICMJE recommendations will be followed.

INTERNATIONAL GUIDELINES

Please check appropriate guidelines according the type of research work that was carried out.

Clinical trials: Manuscripts reporting clinical trials must be registered in one of the registration platform listed by the World Health Organization (REBEC, ClinicalTrials.gov). The registration number must be presented within the paper. The location that the study was registered and the initials and/or the number of the clinical trial must also be provided at the end of the article’s abstract. The submission of clinical trials must adhere to the CONSORT statement.

Observational studies: If submitting an observational study, authors are required to follow the STROBE's guidelines when preparing a manuscript.

Diagnostic studies: Follow STARD or TRIPOD's orientations.

Quality improvement studies: Follow SQUIRE's orientations.

Animal pre-clinical studies: Follow ARRIVE's orientations.

Qualitative research: Follow COREQ or SRQR's orientations.

Study protocol: Follow SPIRIT's orientations.

Case reports: Follow CARE's orientations.

Systematics reviews or meta-analysis observational studies: Follow PRISMA or MOOSE's orientations.

PREPARING THE MANUSCRIPT

All manuscripts (no page limit) must be written with 12-point Arial font, 1.5 spacing, and 3-cm margins in an A4 paper page. They must be submitted in Microsoft Word format (file no bigger than 2 MB) and follow the instructions below:

The title

The title must be informative and concise (25-word maximum).

Abstracts

All abstracts must be written in both Portuguese and in English. The abstract must be followed by keywords found in the Descritores em Ciência da Saúde (DeCS) or Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). The abstract must be limited to 250 (two hundred and fifty) words, and it must be organized by the following topics (headings must appear in the text), according to the type of manuscript, listed below:

• Case reports: Aim, case report, discussion, and conclusion.

• Review articles: Aim, literature review, results (when the article is a systematic review), discussion, and conclusion.

• Original articles: Aim, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. For clinical trials, registration platform and number must be given at the end of the abstract, according to the orientations of the international guideline.

• Short communication: Abstract topics vary according to the type of study (clinical case, literature review, or research paper).

Manuscript main text

Sections are mandatory and may vary according to the type of manuscript submitted:

• Case reports: Title, abstract (Portuguese and English), introduction, case report, discussion, conclusion, and references.

• Review articles: Title, abstract (Portuguese and English), introduction, literature review, results (when the article is a systematic review), discussion, conclusion, and references.

• Original articles: Title, abstract (Portuguese and English), introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusion, and references.

• Short communication: It should contain the same sections according to the type of study (clinical cases, literature review or research papers). Additional observations

• Studies involving human beings and/or animal must mention in the text approval by the local ethical committee as well as its respective number of approval according to instructions in the Ethical Guidelines section.

• Clinical trials: The identification number of the trial must be presented in the text, and the registration must be authorized by a World Health Organization institution according to instructions in the International Guideline section.

• Orientations regarding international guidelines must be followed according to the type of manuscript.

• Authorship identification is not allowed in the main text and must also be removed from the "properties" option in Word.

Title page

To ensure blind peer review, the title page must be submitted SEPARATELY from the main text as a complementary document. The display of data must follow the RFO-POA's title page template, and must include:

• Title in Portuguese and English

• Full name(s) of the author(s) with footnotes that inform their affiliation(s) in English

• Orcid link for all authors

• Name of the corresponding author and their email address

• Declaration of no conflicts of interest • Financial support: Sponsor and process number

• Acknowledgments

• Any other information that can be stated in the title page IMPORTANT: The name of all authors along with their information must be included in the system when submitting on the site in Step 2 (include meta-data, "add author" button). The order of the authors in the system must be exactly the same as the order on the title page. Any contradiction between the title page and the meta-data will result in the devolution of the article before it is sent to peer review. RFO-POA will not be responsible for possible contradictions with the name of the authors.

Abbreviations

All abbreviations must be defined at first mention in the text. They should be avoided in the title except when the abbreviation is more commonly used than the full term. If an abbreviation is used in the title, it should not be followed by its full meaning; instead, at first occurrence in the text, the full term should be used, followed by the abbreviation for identification.

Figures (photos, doodles, graphics, etc.)

All figures must be organized by numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) in the order of appearance in the text. All captions must be clear and short and placed at the bottom of the figure. All information about the figure must be presented in the caption, including abbreviation definitions. Pictures must not allow the identification of the patient. Micro pictures must present internal scales and vectors that contrast with the background. Electronic artwork such as tables must be added in .jpg format, with a minimum resolution of 150 dpi. Graphics being presented in a figure format are best presented in two dimensions. All figures, when identified, must be presented in the main text file, located exactly where they should appear in the final edition. Additionally, all figures should also be submitted as complementary documents.

Tables

All tables must be inserted in the main text and formatted as text and not as a figure, including the respective caption and any footnotes. Tables must NOT be submitted separately.

Citations

All citations must be numbered and follow the Vancouver Reference System. Citations with the name of the authors must follow the template:

• Citations with a maximum of two authors: Mention all authors followed by the reference number: Henz and Nied¹ • Articles with three or more authors: Mention only the first author followed by "et al." and the reference number: Toniolli et al.¹

REFERENCES

All references must be presented according to the Vancouver Reference System, also known as Uniform Requirements, ordered and numbered as they appear in the main text and aligned to the left side of the page. The accuracy of the references is the responsibility of the authors. Orientation:

• The journal's title must be abbreviated according to recommendations of the Index Medicus; abbreviations can be found at the NLM publication List of Serials Indexed for Online Users.

• Personal communications, research work in process, and originals should not be listed as references but instead should be cited in footnotes.

• Using "et al.": For the references, the numbers of authors must be considered: - Publications with up to six authors: All authors should be mentioned; - Publications with more than six authors: Mention the first six authors and then add "et al".

• When referencing an organization or institution, the reference must begin with the full name e entity.of th

• When there is no author or entity, the reference must begin by its title.

• This material does not substitute consultation with the Uniform Requirements.
