The debt trap, a concept created by Brahma Chellaney, attributes responsibility to China for financing large infrastructure projects in peripheral countries and then, due to the debt, establishing a vicious cycle of dependence. This article evaluates the debt trap narrative in reports in four American media outlets - Washington Post, New York Times, CNN and Associated Press - comparing it with scientific production on the subject. The fundamental argument is that the construction and dissemination of this narrative reflects the multimedia power of the United States combined with other, more comprehensive anti-Chinese policies.
