Book Review “South-South Connections: Latin American and Caribbean Foreign Policies towards Africa”

The book “Conexiones sur-sur: las políticas exteriores de América Latina y el Caribe hacia África”, edited by Jerónimo Delgado-Caicedo, Silvia Alejandra Perazzo, Myrna Rodríguez Añuez, and Guilherme Ziebell de Oliveira, brings together 23 authors who examine the foreign policy of Latin American and Caribbean countries, highlighting different levels of engagement with the African continent over the past few decades. Using a comparative approach, the texts emphasize the absence of continuous state policies, as well as the influence of historical, cultural, and political factors in shaping these relations. Furthermore, the role of shared elements between the regions is discussed, along with the limitations arising from eurocentric governmental perspectives and the prioritization of ties with countries of the Global North. Thus, throughout the book, there is an attempt to identify patterns and specificities, highlighting cases of greater engagement in the African continent and regional initiatives involving multilateral organizations.
