Brazil-Iraq relations in the 1980s

Brazil and Iraq relations in the 1970s and 1980s became a significant component of Brazilian foreign policy, characterized by responsible pragmatism and universalism in the effort to diversify international partnerships. Under the Geisel and Figueiredo administrations, Brazil sought to consolidate its autonomy through an active foreign policy, which included expanding its arms exports and technological and nuclear cooperation with countries in the Global South. This article, drawing from primary sources, examines how arms exports to Iraq involved a complex network of diplomacy, private enterprises, and the military sector. The analysis delves into how these activities attracted attention and were monitored by American intelligence, reflecting the geopolitical importance of these relations. Consequently, the article offers a perspective on the dynamics of these interactions, their implications for Brazilian foreign policy, and their significance within the international system.
