O Beemote e o Leviatã:
aspectos geopolíticos para a ausência de um acordo de paz entre Rússia e Japão

O presente artigo explora as relações russo-japonesas a partir de meados do século XIX, com enfoque na disputa pelas ilhas Curilas do Sul, elemento determinante para a ausência de um acordo de paz entre os dois países desde o final da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Nesse contexto, a pesquisa objetiva demonstrar a importância da Geopolítica Clássica para o entendimento da rivalidade global entre a Rússia e o Ocidente, e como ela explica a desconfiança do Kremlin para com o Japão, aliado estratégico das potências marítimas anglo-saxãs ao longo do século XX. A metodologia adotada partirá de uma análise qualitativa de fontes históricas primárias e secundárias, utilizando-se de conceitos da Geopolítica Clássica, mais precisamente dos trabalhos de Halford J. Mackinder e Nicholas Spykman. A partir dessa abordagem, demonstra-se que as disputas por poder na Eurásia envolvendo a “potência terrestre” russa e as “potências marítimas” anglo-saxãs acabaram por interferir na resolução do litígio em torno das ilhas Curilas, impossibilitando, assim, a assinatura de um Acordo de Paz entre Rússia e Japão.
