Livros e leitores em Policarpo Quaresma
Abstract
Este trabalho toma como objeto de análise o romance Triste fim de Policarpo Quaresma, de Lima Barreto (1881-1922), obra que narra as desventuras de um funcionário público num momento crítico da República do Marechal Floriano, trazendo para o primeiro plano, as relações de poder que ali se constituem e se perpetuam. Livros, bibliotecas, títulos acadêmicos, formação escolar e produção escrita aparecem como elementos que definem os lugares e as posições, aonde o ler, o escrever e o possuir livros são atributos determinantes no jogo das relações estabelecidas. A análise da obra coloca em destaque elementos que permitem compreender e construir uma história dos significados do letramento e da constituição das hierarquias sociais que se pautaram no acesso e no uso da palavra escrita.

Abstract
This work analyzes the romance Triste fim de Policarpo Quaresma of Lima Barreto (18811922), an opus that narrates the misfortune of a public servant at a critical moment of the Republic of Marshal Floriano, showing in the foreground the relationships of power that are established and perpetuated there. Books, libraries, academic titles, educational development and written production appear as elements that define places and positions, where reading, writing and possessing books are determinative attributes in the game of established relationships. The analysis of this piece of work makes prominent the elements that allow us to comprehend and construct the history of the meanings of literacy and the constitution of social hierarchies that have been ruled on the access and use of written word.
