ABSTRACT
It is intended to explain the formation of the working class in Alegrete. Workers’ organizations and struggles in the southern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul during the period of the Brazilian Old Republic (1889-1930) have still not been sufficiently explored by academic research. What is the relevance of immigrants in the formation of Alegretense workers’ movement? It was identified the construction of an “internationalist working community” (BILHÃO, 2000) in the city with the following characteristics: programmatic and organizational link with internationalist organizations; circulation of newspapers and press propaganda of the international workers’ press, presence and participation in workers’ conferences, the 1st of May (May Day) and the presence in the city of internationalist militants. It was used the quantitative method with either serial or organized sources so that they could produce numerical information (quantifiable). The main sources used were Tax Records on Industry and Jobs, Press and Civil Registry. It was often resorted to the analysis content technique. It was revealed the significant presence of immigrants or descendants at the base and in the direction of the working bodies of the city in the period. Immigrants and their descendants had more chances to take charge of directive functions of the workers’ movement than nationals. The descendants of immigrants performed the “translation” of the workers’ internationalist culture.
