Abstract

Renée Vivien (1877–1909), a French-speaking English writer, has been primarily rediscovered through studies on Symbolist and homoerotic literature. In Brazil, however, her work remains largely unknown. This article, drawing on the studies of Engelking and Leite, presents a biobibliographical profile of the author and proposes two Portuguese translations of Sonnet féminin—one in alexandrine verse and another in heroic decasyllables—accompanied by commentary on the formal, metrical, and rhyming choices involved. The analysis is grounded in the principles of French versification established by Banville and Grammont, as well as in the reflections of Laranjeira and Meschonnic on the challenges of poetic translation. The aim is to produce translations whose formal structures resonate with the poetic tradition of the target language while preserving the original poem’s sound effects and meanings.
