The INSCRIPTIONS OF THE “FIRST” ACHAEMENIDS?

PORTUGUESE TRANSLATION OF AMHA, ASHA, CMA, CMB AND CMC, WITH COMMENTARIES.

Abstract

For epigraphic, grammatical, and historical reasons, the inscriptions AmHa, AsHa, CMa-c, attributed to the “kings” Ariaramnes and Arsames, as well as king Cyrus II, “the Great”, respectively, are often considered forgeries from later times (modern forgeries or inscriptions from the late Achaemenid period). This is an extremely relevant issue, since the entire Achaemenid History as currently retold by historians would have to be deeply reassessed if these inscriptions were considered authentic. The present article contains a brief introduction to these inscriptions and the diverse theories about them. A Portuguese translation of the Persian texts is presented following SCHMITT’s critical edition (2009), with brief historical and grammatical commentaries on notes. The aim of this article is to widen the access of the common and specialized audience to these (authentic or alleged) Achaemenid texts.
