Abstract

This article aims to investigate Ruth Guimarães's work as a translator, focusing on her translations of Dostoevsky's work in Brazil. This initial study seeks to map Guimarães's role in the circulation of Russian literature in Brazil in the mid-20th century, as well as to reconstruct her place in the history of translation in the country. To achieve this, the study will examine available academic works on Ruth Guimarães's career and the introduction she wrote for Os melhores contos de F. Dostoiévski (The Best Short Stories of F. Dostoevsky). Concurrently, it will consider contemporary discussions on the act of translation and the construction of translation history in Brazil, based on issues such as gender, race, and class. Finally, the article will explore the importance and validity of studies that aim to reclaim the trajectories of silenced Black intellectuals throughout history.
