Abstract

Introduction: The National Policy on Palliative Care (NPPC) represents a significant milestone in care for illness and end-of-life situations. Objective: This essay aims to analyze the NPPC from the perspective of human dignity, considering its legal, medical, and psychological foundations. Development: The analysis highlights positive advances in consolidating previously dispersed regulations and acknowledge the multidimensional nature of human suffering. The Policy incorporates constitutional principles such as universality and comprehensiveness of the national health system (SUS), emphasizing respect for autonomy, total pain, and advance directives. Conclusion: Palliative care, by ensuring quality of life until the end, serves as a means of upholding human dignity as a fundamental right within the context of the SUS.
