“AONDE O SABRE FAÍSCA À LUZ MERIDIANA”: VIOLÊNCIA POLÍTICA EM PASSO FUNDO – O ASSASSINATO DO CORONEL CHICUTA (1892)

RESUMO
O período compreendido entre os anos de 1889 e 1895 foi marcado por efervescentes acontecimentos políticos, nos quais a disputa pelo poder foi permeada por atos de violência e por revoltas em diferentes pontos do país. No Rio Grande do Sul, a rivalidade entre republicanos e federalistas fez eclodir uma guerra-civil no ano de 1893, contudo, o período pré-revolucionário é de intenso acirramento de ânimos e asseveramento de ações violentas entre ambas as facções políticas. Desse modo, o presente texto tem por objetivo analisar e contextualizar a disputa pelo poder nesse período, na região norte do estado, em Passo Fundo, enfocando as ações, embates e protagonistas políticos envolvidos no assassinato do principal líder republicano daquela localidade, Francisco Marques Xavier Chicuta, em 18 de junho de 1892.

ABSTRACT
The period between the years 1889 and 1895 was marked by ebullient political occurrences, in which the contest for power lead to violence acts and rebellions in different parts of the country. In Rio Grande do Sul, the antagonism between republicans and federalists inchoate to a civil war in 1893, however, the pre-revolutionary period was of intense mood worsening and the escalation of violent actions between the two factions. Thus, the present text aims to analyze and contextualize the power struggle in this period, in the northern region of the state, in Passo Fundo, focusing on the actions, clashes and political protagonists involved in the assassination of the main republican leader of that locality, Francisco Marques Xavier Chicuta, on June 18th, 1892.
