CRUZANDO PORTO ALEGRE – UM ESTUDO DA MODERNIZAÇÃO DE PORTO ALEGRE ATRAVÉS DA OBRA “CAMINHOS CRUZADOS” DE ERICO VERÍSSIMO

RESUMO

            O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a modernidade urbana e as mudanças da cidade de Porto Alegre através dos Romances de Urbanização, compreendendo a Literatura como fonte privilegiada. Especificamente com o uso da obra “Caminhos Cruzados” publicada por Erico Verissimo no ano de 1935, considerada uma das obras pioneiras que representam o romance urbano em todo o Brasil, a obra tem como cenário de seu enredo a capital gaúcha. O final da década de 30 no Rio Grande do Sul está marcado pelo crescimento da população urbana e como consequência deste crescimento as questões de saúde pública demandavam atenção, pois o acesso ao saneamento urbano adequado era precário, bem como a capacidade da população em circular pela cidade além de que os limites da cidade estavam sendo ampliados através da venda de terrenos em novas áreas. A obra a ser estudada trata de como se entrelaçam as vidas de seis famílias, sendo três delas integrantes da alta sociedade as outras três representantes da classe trabalhadora, todas residindo em Porto Alegre. Pretende-se compreender em que regiões da capital habitavam -entre o Bairro Moinhos e o Centro Histórico -e de que maneira estes mesmos personagens circulavam pela cidade. Relacionando as informações pinçadas do romance escrito por Erico Verissimo com os dados históricos da capital para que se possa compreender como modernidade urbana da cidade foi incorporada pela população de Porto Alegre.

  ABSTRACT

            The present work aims to study the urban modernity and changes in the city of Porto Alegre through Urbanization Romances, understanding Literature as a privileged source. Specifically with the use of the work “Caminhos Cruzados (Crossed Pathes)” published by Erico Verissimo in 1935, considered one of the pioneers works that represents the urban novel throughout Brazil, the work has the state capital as the scenario of its plot. The end of the 1930’s in Rio Grande do Sul is marked by the growth of the urban population and, as a result of this growth, public health issues demanded attention, as access to adequate urban sanitation was precarious, as well as the population's ability to move around the city beyond that the city limits were being expanded through the sale of land in new areas. The book to be studied deals with how the lives of six families intertwine, three of which are members of high society and the other three representatives of the working class, all residing in Porto Alegre. It is intended to understand in which regions of the capital they lived -between Moinhos and the Historic Center -and how these same characters circulated around the city. Relating the information taken from the novel written by Erico Verissimo with the historical data of the capital so that it is possible to understand how urban modernity of the city was incorporated by the population of Porto Alegre.
