Abstract

This essay examines the international politics surrounding renewable energy and regeneration in Africa, considering the continent’s prospects and challenges regarding climate adaptation and mitigation. It acknowledges that Africa is currently experiencing environmental crises and degradation due to climate change while contributing the least to it. The essay argues that renewable energy is a viable solution for Africa to meet its energy needs while reducing carbon footprints. It emphasises the international aspects and implications of Africa’s energy transition, focusing on the geopolitical context concerning climate change adaptation and mitigation. In doing so, the current challenges that African countries face in harnessing renewable resources are critically examined. First, the urgency of transitioning to greener energy solutions is discussed, arguing that such a transition is essential not only for the environment but also for local economic development prospects. Second, Africa’s renewable resources are interrogated, outlining how, in a different geopolitical context, they could reshape power on the continent and beyond.
