Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • (I) Manuscripts submitted must constitute the authors’ own intellectual work. The use of generative artificial intelligence tools in the full or partial preparation of submitted manuscripts is prohibited, including, among other aspects, textual production and the development of bibliographic references. All manuscripts will be screened by the Plagius software. Any manuscripts in which evidence of the use of generative artificial intelligence tools in textual production or research sources is identified shall be rejected.
  • (II) Submitted manuscripts must fall within the scope of the Journal by addressing Africa’s International Relations. The thematic component of the submission must align with debates on African countries’ Foreign Policy, International Cooperation, Integration Organizations, Security and Defense, Political Systems, Economic Development, Social Structures, Currents of Thought, as well as historical and geopolitical processes that examine the international dimension of African events. The following aspects shall be considered in the preliminary evaluation:
    (a) Originality of the research.
    (b) Novelty of the manuscript. Otherwise, a justification must be provided in “Comments to the Editor”.
    (c) Compliance with the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in the "Author Guidelines", on the “About the Journal” page.
    (d) Declaration of institutional data and academic affiliations, including Department, Institution, City, Country, E-mail, and ORCID.

Author Guidelines

1. The Brazilian Journal of African Studies (BJAS) publishes scientific articles and bibliographical reviews at no cost to authors.

2. A number of BJAS can be divided in the following sections: Editor's Note (Editorial), Articles (Artigos) and Book Reviews (Resenhas) or it may be constituted as a Thematic Dossier.

3. The manuscript must be unpublished and may be submitted in Portuguese, English or Spanish.

4. The total completion, by the author (s), of the submission form is essential. The author(s) must inform full name, title, institutional affiliation (full name of institution) and an e-mail for contact.

5. The required title is that of Doctor. In case of co-authorship, the main author must be the person with such title.

6. The manuscript must include title and subtitle (if there's any), abstract of 200 to 300 words, including objectives, problematization/ hypotheses (if there are any), methodology and results.

7. The manuscript should have between 35,000 and 50,000 characters (counting spaces and footnotes, excluding references).

8. The maximum number of reference pages allowed is 20% of the total of pages with content. Provide references with URLs when needed.

9. References must be in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style system, in the Author-Date format and at the end of the text. They must also necessarily include the sources used in the text.

10. Footnotes should be restricted to additional clarifications of the text.

11. The file must be submitted in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice or RTF format.

12. The manuscript must be written in Times New Roman, size 12 points and 1.5 spacing.

13. When necessary, use italics instead of underscores (except for URL addresses).

14. Images should be inserted along the text, not at the end of the document as attachments.

15. The use of images (flowcharts, maps, tables, and figures) should be restricted to what is essential for illustrating the arguments developed in the text. All images must be supplied in .EPS format and also in an editable format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

16. In the case of bibliographic reviews, the complete data and the ISBN of the analyzed work must be reported. The focus should be on works that are relevant to the area.

17. Bibliographic reviews must contain up to 4,500 characters (including spaces and footnotes).

18. Failure to comply with the guidelines listed above will result in the immediate return of the manuscript so that the appropriate corrections can be made and a new version can be submitted.
