This article investigates the poem “At fifty I am startled to find I am in my splendor”, by the Chicana author Sandra Cisneros, from the literary studies and intersectional feminism points of view. Here, we propose an analysis of the elements of Chicano culture in the poem, critically interpreting the way in which the use of these elements supports a reinterpretation of the traditional perspective of female aging, in which the “cultural devaluation” of older women is operative, according to Holstein (2006). Furthermore, we consider the approach of Cisneros’ literature to the theoretical concepts of Borderlands, in-betweenness, and La mestiza, coined by Gloria Anzaldúa (1987). The results of this research show that Cisneros, in her poem, subverts the representation of women who are in the process of aging, through a speaker that becomes politically conscious of their body through identities of gender, race, ethnicity and, above all, age.
