Abstract

The Ethnographic Tarot of Marseille is the result of the research residency at Iméra-AMU, carried out between 2023 and 2024 in the Mediterranean city of Marseille, France. In this article, I highlight the unforeseen methodological path that gave rise to this work. This route evokes the dream as an important research insight and the pilgrimage proposed by Ingold (2011) as a way of getting to know places. This research is inspired by the “Brief illustrated encyclopedic dictionary of My Cancer” by artist Josune Urrutia Asua, by the artistic project “Arcanos Menores” by anthropologist Daniela Rodrigues, by the ancient Tarot de Marseille and the Jeu de Marseille, made by Andre Breton and other surrealists . These references are important for the genesis of this project, which sought not only to learn a new language — French, Marseillais — and the stories present in Marseille, but to express this learning through a language — tarot — current in the city studied, thus mimicking form and content.
