Abstract

How did a discipline with a humanistic tradition become a science with a Newtonian character throughout the 20th century? In this article, I trace the history of the discipline of political science from the perspective of its theoretical and methodological developments, namely in respect to its mathematical and statistical formalization. These processes allowed for the consolidation of the discipline under a certain understanding of science (one that is closer to the Newtonian sciences), whilst incorporating the complexity of political phenomena in academic research. This legacy persists to the present day under new guises, especially within the neoinstitutional paradigm and on the interfaces with other disciplines, such as cognitive psychology, behavioral economics and the science of complex systems.
