Abstract

This article investigates the circulation of the theme of death in children’s literature through an analysis of school library collections established by the PNLD. Grounded in Discourse Analysis, it understands the school library as a discursive archive in which the meanings authorized to circulate for childhood are regulated. The search identified only one work addressing the theme, O Livro da avó, in which death is displaced into the realm of memory through paraphrastic families and visual resources construct it indirectly. The findings indicate that the silencing of death constitutes an effect of hegemonic discourses that conceive childhood as a space of protection, thereby limiting what can be said within the school archive.
