Revisiting DNa/AB: Introduction, Portuguese Translation and Commentaries on the Inscription DNa/AB from Darius’ Tomb at Naqsh-i Rustam

Abstract

This article presents a brief critical introduction to the funerary complex at Naqsh-i Rustam, focusing on the tomb of Darius I (522-486 BCE). It proposes a Portuguese translation of DNa/AB. It highlights how authors usually resort to the Old Persian version of this inscription only, leaving behind many possibilities for critical examination of the royal inscriptions from the Achaemenid Period (c. 550-330 BCE). In the introduction and commentaries, we reflect upon the interpretations of this monumental complex as an expression of an atemporal image of Achaemenid royalty and we question its alleged propagandistic nature. Besides, we strive to retrace the funerary practices of the Achaemenids to their Mesopotamian context, especially due to the presence of a vaçabara figure (Aspathines) in the complex. Finally, we discuss the meaning of the Achaemenid multilingualism in this monument, according to recent scholarly discussions.
