Abstract

This article analyzes the insertion of the Western Caribbean in the economic globalization of the eighteenth century. In this sense, it reviews how the lack of strict control of the Spanish crown helped the territories of the Western Caribbean -composed of the coast of the Mosquitia and the adjacent islands, together with its inhabitants and a contingent of imperial and commercial agents from different parts of Europe-, playa fundamental role in the construction of a global network of trade and merchants inserted into the circuits of production and consumer markets that were configured early between Europe, North America and the Caribbean, taking as a vehicle the British mercantile connections. From the theoretical and conceptual point of view, we used the postulates of global history from a regional scope, and methodologically, we approached it from a historical perspective using a documentary collection of the eighteenth century, which is in the Spanish archives and the General Archive of the Nation in Colombia.
