Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the fracture strength of restored teeth with direct composite resin (Filtek P60 – 3M/ESPE) and composite inlays (BelleGlass - sds/Kerr), in MOD cavities. Thirty two maxillary premolars were divided in four equal groups: group 1 - sound teeth; group 2 – MOD cavity restored with P60 composite resin; group 3 – MOD cavity restored with BelleGlass; and group 4 - MOD prepared teeth (no restoration). All specimens were tested in relation to fracture strength, in universal testing machine, with 0,5 mm/min cross-head speed. Data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey tests, with a significance level of 1%. Results showed statistically significant differences among all groups: group 1 showed better performance than group 2, which one had better performance than group 3, which one had better performance than group 4. It was concluded that MOD cavities decreased fracture strength; direct and indirect adhesive restorations improved fracture strength, when compared to prepared teeth (no restoration). Direct restoration showed better behavior than inlays, in relation to fracture strength.
