Evaluation of access to dental services and satisfaction of individuals with Down’s syndrome in the view of their parents or caregivers

Objective: To evaluate the access to dental services and satisfaction of individuals with Down’s syndrome (DS) in the view of their parents or caregivers. Materials and methods: Fifty-four parents or caregivers of individuals with DS participated in the study. The data collection was performed through a structured questionnaire containing questions related to the sociodemographic characteristics of the individual with Down’s syndrome (DS), of their family member or caregiver, and also regarding access to dental services and satisfaction. The questionnaire was answered by parents or caregivers responsible for individuals with DS. The study was conducted in the city of Porto Alegre (RS). Results: The vast majority of parents or caregivers reported that their children had already visited the dentist (89.10%). The first consultation was performed at 5.8 years-old, and the main reason was to do prevention procedures (48.78%). Public services were the most used services by this population (65.32%), and the time for make an appointment was on average one week. The dental care provided to the individual with DS was evaluated by the majority as good/great and 97.9% of the interviewees considered themselves satisfied with the dental services offered to their children. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, the individuals with Down’s syndrome (SD) residing in Porto Alegre have access to dental services and their parents/caregivers feel satisfied with the care received by their children.Downloads
