Influence of Stevia rebaudiana on oral health – literature review

Introduction: Stevia rebaudiana is a plant native of South America, from which stevia is extracted, a natural non caloric sweetener with a higher sweetening potential than sucrose, with no adverse effects and has been shown to have many benefits for systemic health and, more recently, for oral health. The objective of the present literature review is to present the benefits of Stevia as an important option for replacing the use of sucrose and artificial sweeteners, especially regarding its relationship with oral health. Discussion: Stevia studies contribute with important information about the anticariogenic potential and antimicrobial role, arising from its ability to reduce bacterial load, biofilm formation, avoiding high pH decreases and acting as an anti-inflammatory agent. Stevia can become a complement to oral health care in the form of mouthwash, toothpaste, chewing gum, artificial saliva, chewable tablets, and its beneficial effect on overall health, especially in patients with obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Conclusion: In this way, Stevia presents advantages when compared to other artificial sweeteners, besides being an excellent option to substitute sucrose.Downloads
