Interceptive orthodontic treatment of malocclusion caused by mesiodens: Case report

Abstract

This article reports an interceptive orthodontic treatment of a malocclusion caused by the presence of supernumerary tooth in mixed dentition phase boy. After the diagnosis of the mesiodens as the cau-se of the distal translation of the upper left central incisor, the toot hwas surgically removed and followed by orthodontic treatment.The treatment consisted of medial translation of upper left central incisor using a combination of fixed and removable orthodontic appliances.After the correction of the upper left central incisor position, space for the eruption of the upper left lateral incisor was created. As a result the smile and patient facial esthetics was recovered. This article shows the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in cases of supernumerary teeth to prevent or intercept this malocclusions.
