Sociodemographic Profile and Professional Perspectives of Students from the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Objectives: To know the sociodemographic profile and professional perspectives of students from the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional study performed by semistructured questionnaire, previously tested, divided in: sociodemographic profile of the students, about their choice for dentistry and perspective of professional activities. 360 students from 1st to 10th semester (85.5% of the total) participated in the study. A databank was created with the collectedin formation (objective questions) in statistical package SPSS. Answers involving opinios were interpreted by content analysis method. Results: The majority of students are women, youngsters, single, without children, from Rio Grande do Sul, without dentists in the family, non-working, although with research projects, tutor or extention vinculation, paid or not. Their parents present high level of education and are inserted in the work world. The expectancies related to the career relate to professional happiness, education to the work world and personal happiness. The students intend to work both in public and private sectors, as well as to continue with further education in specialization courses, especially in the areas of prosthodontics/implants, surgery and orthodontics. Conclusion: The results allowed to identify the profile of the students of FOUFRGS and their perspectives related to their profession.Downloads
