Endodontic surgery: a review of the literature and surgical cases report

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present two cases where paraendodontic surgery was performed because the conservative endodontic therapy and the root filling had failed. That would be the major propose of paraendodontic surgery: helping endodontic techniques when those didn’t work satisfactorily. On the first case reported, a patient was referred to paraendodontic surgery with simultaneous root filling because its maxillary lateral incisor presented uncontrolled exsudate through the root canal, making the drying and root filling impossible. The radiographic exam showed an image compatible with periapical cyst, which was confirmed by microscope examination. The second patient presented a parietal perforation in its right mandibular canine. Because of this perforation it was impossible to get to the apical zone. With paraendodontic surgery, the perforation site was filled with silver amalgam, providing ideal access to the apex, getting the endodontic therapy done.
