Parendodontic surgery: when and how to do

Abstract

The parendodontic surgery associated to endodontics is the option in treatment when it’s not possible to eliminate the etiologic agent of the periapical inflammatory process in the usual way, that is, through endodontics treatment. However, there are several techniques to be described, and to the beginner it’s difficult to determine which is of good use in the different situations. In this literature review, several surgical methods of apical approach have been found, these methods have distinct indications, the apicoectomy and retrograde obturation are the most usual for research. Despite the development in this area, with the introduction of new techniques such as the laser there are several causes for the failure of apical surgery. We propose the analysis of different methods described by means of a literary review, and conclude that all are valid, as long as the proposed goal, that is, the removal of the causing agent, is reached.
