Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the influence of different disinfectants on the dimensional stability of an alginate (Orthoprint/Zhermack). Materials and Methods: Seventy specimens were constructed with the impression material, from a metal matrix, and distributed into the following groups (n=10): Control - washing with water (CTL); use of 1% sodium hypochlorite (HCS); use of 0.2% peracetic acid (APE); use of 0.5% hydrogen peroxide (PH1/PH2); use of quaternary ammonium + polyhexanide (QP1/QP2). From a metallic matrix and following the specification nº 19 of the ADA and the instructions of the manufacturers, 70 alginate specimens were obtained, distributed among the groups (n = 10). To analyze the dimensional change (AD%), the distance between specific points of the specimens was evaluated using a stereomicroscope, with 1.65 times magnification and compared to the matrix.  The data obtained were transformed into percentages using a mathematical formula and submitted to the Student's t-test and analysis of variance, and means were compared using Tukey's test. Results: Significant dimensional changes were observed in groups PH2 (AD% = + 0.58, p = 0.008) and QP2 (AD% = + 0.34 p = 0.039) when compared with the value of the metallic matrix. discussion: Simplified disinfection products can be used on alginate without causing significant dimensional changes, depending on the composition of the disinfectant. Conclusion: Most of the disinfectants (HCS, APE, PH1, and QP1) did not cause significant dimensional changes in the alginate, with the exception of PH2 and QP2.
