Evolution of the report of dental pain among brazilian students:
National School Health Survey - 2015 to 2019

Aim: To describe the distribution of dental pain presence among Brazilian schoolchildren. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional observational study using data from the 2015 and 2019 editions of the Brazilian National School Health Survey. The prevalence of dental pain in the six months prior to the surveys and their respective confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated and stratified according to sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics. The variables were compared between the two surveys considering the presence or absence of overlap between the 95%CI. Results: A reduction in the prevalence of dental pain was observed between the surveys of 2015 and 2019 (23.5% [CI95% 22.1-24.9] vs. 21.2% [CI95% 21.0-21.5]). The highest prevalence of dental pain was observed among female students (CI95% 24.4-28.0 vs. CI95% 23.4-24.3), aged 16 or 17 years (CI95% 21.5-25.6 vs. CI95% 23.2-24.4), with self-declared black skin color (CI95% 25.7-34.4 vs. CI95% 23.0-24.8), children of mothers with no education or incomplete elementary education (CI95% 24.5-29.6 vs. CI95% 24.9-26.4), students from public schools (CI95% 23.1-26.1 vs. CI95% 23.0-28.9), and those who reported brushing their teeth once or none a day (CI95% 24.7-33.8 vs. CI95% 26.6-29.2). Discussion: A lower socioeconomic context, including family income and maternal education, influences habits and behaviors, causing negative impacts on the oral health and routine of Brazilian adolescents. Conclusion: Despite the prevalence of dental pain showing a slight decrease between the 2015 and 2019 editions, adolescents in vulnerable situations remain the most affected groups by dental pain.
