The influence of EDTA in the interface of two resin based cements and canal walls

Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to exam, in vitro, with the aid of scanning electron microscopy, the interface between two resin based cements and the root canal wall. During canal preparation, 1% sodium hypoclorite was used as the irrigation solution. Group 1 (SEALER 26) and Group 3 (AH PLUS) only received 3,6m1 of NaC1O as the final flush for 1 minute. Group 2 (SEALER 26) and Group 4 (AH PLUS) had 1,8m1 of 17% EDTA for 3 minutes stirred with a K-Flex file, resting 2 more minutes in the canal. After a final flush of 1% NaC10 the canals were dryed with paper points and filled with either AH PLUS or SEALER 26 using Tagger's technique. There were statically significant differences between the group 4 (AH PLUS) and the other groups (p < 0,001). The authors conclude that AH PLUS cement, without the smear layer, presented a better performace regarding dentinal tubuli penetration, followed by SEALER 26. Both cements showed lower performances when the smear was present.
