Abstract

Morphometrical studies of tangue, oral mucosa, osteointegration zones and salivary glands are frequently performed in histological research. The stereological method is often used when measuring proportions related to area, volume, number of structures, etc. The objective of this article is to describe a stereological method used to determine the number of sample points in a grid, and its application in the analysis of images in histological research. For such we used three histological slides from mice submandibular salivary glands as example to explain the method. Stereology is a tool that allows excellent results when properly applied. Its use, when the criteria to determine the number of sample points are respected, allows the attainment of reliable data if quantitative analysis of histological material is planned.
