Sustainable Frugal Innovations: an analysis based on the patent database of Brazi

With the increasing demand for supplies, Frugal Innovation (FI) can be a healthy path for the productive increase necessary to supply the 9 billion inhabitants in the world by 2050. This type of innovation seeks to meet the needs, local or of a group, with some resource constraint. Despite the relevance of the theme, Brazil is little represented in the literature with FI cases. The objective of this work was to identify patents related to Frugal Innovations in Brazil, through consultations to the Brazilian patent database. The patents found were classified as FI from 3 requirements: a) have low cost; b) focus on meeting a need, local or of an audience, with some resource constraint and c) lead to sustainability. Finally, 15 patents were identified, most were solutions for the food and health sectors. This result indicates few solutions of this type in Brazil.
