The article aims to analyze the performance of Brazil during the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, also known as the Stockholm
Conference, which took place in 1972. The Conference consisted in the first moment in which, within the scope of the UN, countries organized
themselves at a global event to address environmental issues. At the time, several issues contributed to guide the Brazilian position, such as the
projects of the military regime for the national territory and the ideas of restricting growth that circulated in some organizations. In this context, the
research aims to analyze how Brazil positioned itself in the first UN Conference on the environment. To this end, a documental analysis will be carried
out, in which official sources will be used, such as the statements of Brazilian representatives and the reports of the Brazilian delegation. The analysis
of Brazilian foreign policy at the Conference allows us to conclude that the country was considerably reluctant in relation to the treatment of
environmental issues at the international level, that its main objective at that time was development and that no measure could limit this objective. In
short, it was defended that policies relating to the environment were the exclusive concern of each country.
