The literature that studies the economic development phenomenon has stressed the importance of good public policies and institutions in this process, including their influence on factors of production accumulation and productivity. With this background, the present study’s objective is to assess mainly the institutional quality and human capital effects on the Brazilian municipalities’ development level according to their geographical location. Also, we check if the institutional quality effects are robust to distinct development indicators and the municipal population size. The results indicate that the institutional quality indicator has a crucial influence on the Brazilian municipalities economic development regardless of the development indicator, and its influence is distinct according to the region in which they are located and to their population size.
