The objective of this article is to analyze the effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth, considering the income levels of host countries. We used the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) System in a panel data set comprising 80 countries, covering the period from 1996 to 2015. The results show that FDI contributes to economic growth, and its effects are conditioned by the characteristics of the host countries. Specifically, countries with higher levels of human capital, larger financial markets, greater trade openness, and better institutional quality are better able to absorb FDI, transforming it into economic growth.
